THE BLACK HOUSE
To bring the property up to date while embracing the character of the existing building.
To create a family bathroom, a fourth bedroom, a ground floor guest suite, improved access to the garden, new kitchen and living area, update the exterior elements of roof, gutters and windows. All within a defined budget.
The property is a mid-war, architect designed house, that imbued many modern features for the period in which it was built. There were interesting 1960's modifications. However, the property had suffered at the hands of previous owners who had added a rear extension which obscured views into the garden and had installed a ground floor shower room that congested the main flow of the ground floor.
Our aim was to allow the existing features to flourish while improving the flow to the ground floor and the all important connection to the mature garden.
The removal of the clutter to the entrance enabled an original double height stair gallery to breath while demolishing the ground floor shower room provided the space for a generous, light filled entrance. The brave removal of the majority of the rear extension enabled the construction of a vaulted kitchen, dining and living space.
The choice of cladding chosen to link the building with its rural environment was carefully selected to stitch the old in with the new.
The homeowner's words
Mark was a fantastic architect to work with. We thought we knew what we wanted to do with the house before meeting, but he showed us how we could change the layout of the entrance to the house and go from quite ordinary to interesting, light and welcoming. These were changes we had never considered, but are so glad he could see with his wealth of experience and keen eye for design.
Mark helped us and the builders all the way through the build, with insightful interior suggestions, tricky build decisions and encouraged us to make good choices when it came to big things, like windows and cladding. It was a pleasure to work with Mark and without his expertise we wouldn’t have the home we absolutely love.
