Surrey Hills

The brief

To create a space for the client's young family to grow into.

The project

“Matt and Lucy’s home is possibly one the first of the true design collaborations where I was permitted to explore my design ambitions and to interpret them alongside the clients needs.” Mark Fox

This is one of Mark's first design projects and it therefore captures a simplicity and honesty that we endeavour to maintain as a practice. The house is nestled at the foot of the Surrey Hills and is joined by other brick and tiled houses therefore it was felt that a highly visual, contemporary statement would not sit comfortably within the setting.

However, through conversation, a strong desire to express the merging of the old with the new was developed for the internal spaces. To do this we have knitted the footprint of the old building into the new reflected ceiling, using raised vaulting with exposed structural components.

The end result is an external façade that merges with neighbouring dwellings yet contains a light bright modern living environment. It is a space that invites you back in after an afternoon in the garden.

The homeowner's words

I would highly recommend Mark Fox, we have trusted Mark with two build projects on our home and I wouldn't hesitate on commissioning him for a third should there be a need.

Mark listened well to our requirements, proposed options which not only addressed these but offered sensible and often more exciting alternatives to enhance our vision. Add to this an ability to explain potentially quite complicated technical specifications, in a way that makes sense to an uneducated buyer, an eye for both detail and practicality and a strong ability to plan and organise.
