THE BRAY'S

HOUSE

The brief

A complete modernisation over three floors, culminating at the ground floor with a large family room.

The project

The Bray's house, a turn of the century property in a street where houses don’t often become available, near Kingston’s town centre. Jo and Doug have a design flare and wanted to create a family home for their energetic and small, but growing family.

The proposed work pushed financial limits; a guest suite, an office, three main bedrooms, a family bathroom, an ensuite, a TV room, a separate laundry, a dining space and most importantly a kitchen zone with a seamless connection to the patio and garden. The aim of this project was to provide something that matched their gregarious personalities.

Jo and Doug were great collaborators and comfortable with expressing their ideas. To meet their tall programme, we refined a few key items that could be delivered in the kitchen; a polished concrete floor, exposed brickwork, exposed steel beams and an oversized roof light. This approach imbued the rest of the project with a simple set of design principles: maximum space, maximum light and a contemporary raw finish.

The homeowners words

We had a vision. After months of searching, we found the perfect blank canvas which to transform into our ideal home. We had renovated properties before but not to the extend we wanted.

Next was to find the right architect/builder who shared our vision and could make it into reality!

After meeting numerous architects, various neighbours recommended Mark. Personal recommendations in our eyes are the best and we weren’t disappointed!

From the outset Mark listened to our thoughts and ideas, of which there were many, and came back with three viable schemes that were within our budget. One was exactly what we had in our minds, a real mix of modern, contemporary but with a bit of the industrial feel thrown in.

Throughout the build we met on a weekly basis to discuss the build, covering all aspects. This included the ever important budget, what was the schedule of works, materials required and decisions to be made. Mark was cool, calm and collected every step of the way and excelled at managing me and also our expectations.

His team of builders and various trades were a brilliant, highly skilled, committed bunch that we enjoyed sharing our home with for six months.

Any problems encountered, Mark always came with a variety of solutions which took away any unnecessary stress which was much appreciated as we were living in the house during the build with two small kids.

Eight years on we are all still in complete awe of the space that Mark and his team created for us.

All I can think is...how lucky are we!
